Innovation in UK Charities
What the sector told us, why it matters, and what to do about it.
Most charities know they need to innovate. Few feel they have the conditions to do it well. The pressure is visible: fundraising is plateauing, delivery models are under strain, and the expectation to do more with less has rarely felt more urgent.
To better understand why innovation keeps stalling, we engaged with Heads of Innovation, Directors, and Innovation Leads working at the sharp end of that tension. Six barriers emerged consistently across those conversations, from unclear purpose and weak sponsorship to risk aversion and innovation happening at too low a speed and volume.
This report names those barriers honestly, shares what is already working across the sector, and sets out a practical roadmap for moving forward. We hope the reflections, case studies, and practical tools give you something useful to take back to your organisation.
